Our SCI Recovery Program

After a thorough evaluation, an individualized exercise program will be created by our Spinal Cord Injury Exercise & Recovery Specialists, depending on each clients needs. Below are our Five Steps of Spinal Cord Injury Recovery:

  1. Neuromuscular Reactivation-Stimulating the neuromuscular system by utilizing passive and/or active movements which recruit motor units to regain function. Examples of equipment used in this step are the Power Plate and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bike. Increasing flexibility through Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching is also emphasized during this step.
  2. Motor Learning/Motor Control and Integration-Developmental stage in which the client re-learns functional body movements through various body weight and trainer assisted/resisted range of motion exercises. After the client's body learns to perform movements correctly, the individual will focus on controlling those movements in all planes and ranges of motion.
  3. Total Body Muscular Endurance and Strength-This step initially utilizes high repetition multiple set resistance training workouts to develop muscular endurance. Once an optimal level of muscular conditioning is reached, the client progresses to low repetition high-intensity strength training workouts. Exercise equipment used during this step include the Total Gym, Hammer Strength equipment, medicine balls, resistance bands, free weights and the client's own body weight.
  4. Stablization/Balance-Improve stability through core stabilization training (targets abdominals, erector spinae, and hip flexors/extensors). Balance can be improved by performing exercises that focus on the client's center of gravity, base of support, and stimulation of proprioceptors which provide feedback to the brain about body position. Learning to sit, crawl and stand are taught during this step.
  5. Gait Training-Using equipment such as the spin bike, parallel bars, and treadmill, this final step will teach the client how to walk again and continue to keep Pressing On!
